Daily driver, or weekend corner carver? An 87 RS America would be a pretty wicked car, but it would be impossible to drive one on a daily basis, as it's a pretty rough (and loud) ride.

At this point, if you're looking at the 15+ year old time frame, the most important thing to look for is complete service records.

However, nothing beats the handling or heritage of a 911. If it's a PORSCHE that you want, not just to go fast in a car with a Porsche crest on the hood then get a 911. Does that make sense?[/b]I'd agree with that. There's "porsche mystique" and then there is "porsche 911" mystique...

My Dentist is trying to sell me his 86 911 Turbo Coupe with 57,000 miles for $31,000.
98.5 SE Sport badgeless, MTX, KKM, SVT exhaust with resonator intact. 1985 Z51 Vette with many mods. Only used when the Tour appears to be outclassed.

Great article in the October issue (IIRC) of Grassroots Motorsports called "Affordable Porsches" with some good info on several different models. What I gathered is that even though good iron can be obtained reasonably, maintenance gets real expensive. For entertainment, check out the story here about one man's quest for his very own 911.

At that price, go for an 89 944 Turbo or Turbo S. Ridiculously fast and great handling in stock form. And they can be tweaked to go alot faster (as well as handle better) for not alot of money. You're looking at a very old 911 in the $15K range, and the older 911s aren't the greatest cars in the world, especially from a realiability point of view. The 944 is often scoffed at as a "fake" Porsche, but come to a PCA event, and you'll see ALOT of 944s on the track (many of these 911 owners who have 944s as their track cars), putting down consistantly faster numbers than alot of 911s. They're great cars that aren't as expensive as 911s to fix, and they are plentiful, hence the cheaper prices. Or, you can keep saving, and buy a really high mileage (60-90K) 97 Boxster for around $25K (maybe even better, you never know). As much fun as P-cars are, they're even better in convertible form! And mid-engined handling is hard to beat

I agree with Cartman 15k will buy you a heck of a 951 with room to mod. I was looking at $5k-7k for a running 951 but in need of a complete drivetrain revamp. As it was to be a track only car I wasn't too concerned with body condition, only that it be straight, etc. If you're budget is $15 then you have a significant amount of moola to get wicked fast at the local PCA event. In a 911, well let's just say it would be a fixer-upper. The best thing to do is go drive a 944 and a 911 then make up your mind...
