Saying that is basically like saying you need to go to college to be successful. I have several friends/know people that are doing extremely well without a college degree - some making 6 figures in before the age of 30. Sure it's not common, but it happens, and it can happen in the military also.

You can argue all you want, but no branch gets more respect than the Marines do. Of the many military (and ex) people that I have met, no one states more proudly of the branch they served in than Marines.

Based on infuryum's most recent post, honor and pride are high on his list.

Don't make generalizations. It tends to insult those that are not part of those types of comments. I'm a Marine, proud to be one, sure I could trash the other branches, but what's the point? Better to present infuryum with the benefits of each branch rather than waste his time making ignorant comments like

I very very much enjoy the idea of graduating from a U.S. service academy, which has been my dream since I was a junior in high school. If the Marines can help me recognize my full potential and help me in an appointment to the USNA, so be it.

Since my farking eyesight prohibits me from joining USAFA, the USNA is a very appropriate alternative. I would be a Marine officer any day over a Naval officer... end of story. College money and pride of being go hand in hand, in my opinion. My only desires are to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy and to be a Marine officer. I don't particularly care if the Army or the Navy or C.G. can offer more money. There's more to life...

If the USNA can tell me I have a fighting chance after enlisting (either active or A.R.) I will sign up and ship out the first week of June. I'm not interested in the Army or Navy or C.G.
infuryum,
What you described sounds exactly like what I had planned to do - I wanted to be a Marine officer. Unfortunately, I didn't have the right connections/recommendations to make it - I only knew a couple officers in the Navy.

To this point, there has been little to challenge the pride I take in being a Marine. Made it even more special for me considering I blew out my knee 1/2 way during boot. Never told anyone because I wanted to graduate on time with my platoon, so I finished basic with torn ligaments in my knee, practically dragging my leg.

Don't count out the other branches though. At least go see what they offer you in terms of your aspirations. Find the best fit and go with it.

If you want to chat drop me an IM with your IM name.

Good luck. smile

Marines, d*mn knuckle draggers.
Good for nothing except to use as bullet shields.

J/K laugh

Army Reserve PsyOps here.

We've had some war games against Marines in the past. Tough guys, they just keep coming no matter how hard you whoop on them.
We actually ended the games tied, but still there were 3 times as many of them.

What games were these? Reserves against reserves? Recruiting office wargames? Infantry Battalions against Battalions? Be more specific here. Marines donot use a large number of soidiers like the Army does during combat. wink

If you really just want to go to the Naval Academy, you want to look into NAPS (Naval Academy Prep School) That might be what you are looking for.

I'm 22 and if I'm not appointed by the fall of 2003 (next year), I'll be too old.

Wow, I hadn't seen this! eek

Like Trapps said, unless someone's been in all the branches (I think not), you can't take what one person says to heart. Each person has had a different job in his or her branch, each has been in the service at a different time and at a different place, and everyone has had good and bad times.

I was almost signing on the dotted line with the Corps when I got out of HS, but didn't because they wouldn't guarantee a specific job. I chose to join the Army at a 12B, Combat Engineer. When I took the ASVAB, I got a GT of 126, which opened up almost any job I wanted in the Army......but blowing things up sounded cool at age 18. laugh People will say this basic is harder than this one, but as someone put it earlier, the real military is when you get to your duty station. Basic is just a break down, build up game.

Like Pete said, each branch has something to offer. Talk to as many people as you can, and shop around. I had a great time in the Army and would have stayed in longer, but I got married to a fellow soldier, and married life in the military......ANY BRANCH, isn't the best thing.

My wife is still in the Army, only serving in the MD National Guard. Her GI Bill covers all her school, plus the Guard pays her as well. That's one benifit of being in the Guard over the Reserves.
