How many of you former devildogs have seen a day in combat? I am not talking about being part of a support unit such as equipment supply or armory personell either laugh . Marine Bootcamp is a joke compared to what you see in the actual field as a grunt. I am a former Marine too that served during the Gulf War (ending) with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Joining the Marines takes a special person indeed, but it's not that hard if you are the person that dont let mental games get to your head.

I would give anything to sharpen my K-Bar against someone's skull. laugh

In order to get into the USNA, you need to have a letter of recommendation from a state official, i.e. senator.

Personally, I would choose the marines over the navy..unless I was going to be a fighter pilot...

Infuryum,
If you do decide against going into the Corps, let me know and I can give you the heads up on some good tips when going to see a recruiter for any of the other services (except Coast Guard), as I shopped around when I was looking to enlist and know some about all the different services.

Not if you are active duty, All of the Academies have several slots devoted just to active duty service members of all the branches. One of my friends in the Army got accepted to the Air Force Academy while attending DLI and 2 Airmen I was in class with got accepted to West Point and Anapolis.

I also have an inside scoop on nominations and I wouldn't need to beg a senator or congressman to write me a letter.

Keep it up. This is good info. smile

Also, another good thing to look into is the ROTC program, I have my boss lookin into that now... the Naval Academy is awesome!!!

But if you really dont wanna bust your azz on anything, then just pick a service and do four years and get at least an associates degree in something related to your field... I already have job offers from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and a few more cause they are the ones that make to sights and systems that i work on every day, even though i dont have my degree yet, they know I know what im working on, and it is their stuff that im repairing and keeping inspected, also if you do decide to join in the service, do every little "b" billet type stuff you can, cause now I can get an extra 5 grand at least a year, just for being a QC inspector in the corps!!! cause not a lot of peeps are able to do QC which is more money!!!

So its up to you!! pick a field you like get in it, graduate honor grad (like me!! laugh ) and then when you get to the fleet, get yourself into college with your MGIB or something like that with TA and you are set, dont have to pay one thing, just work out a deal with your command, and it can happen, by this time next year I should have an associates in electronic engineering , and you can do it to...

infuryum,
I enlisted in the USMC in 1994.
I know a lot of guys/firnds in a lot of different branches - USMC, Army, Navy, Air Force, and USCG.

It really depends what you want to do as a career.
If you've got that figured out, then it makes things much easier.

Go to each respective branch and see what they can do for you, not what they want you to do.
Don't let the recruiters smooth talk you. Go in knowing what you want.

A good friend of mine - he's huge, 6'1" 225lbs, all muscle - would have made a great grunt of some type, but wanted to get into computers. He shopped around and he was able to land a great MOS in the Navy doing exactly what he wants to do after he gets out.

IMHO, getting the right MOS is most important, regardless of branch.

Good luck, and let us know what you do.
