I start my new job on Monday, as a team leader for a large IT support staff. We've got a week of orientation before going live. My boss e-mailed me tonight, and this is what she said:

"And now for the good part! I want you each to come up with an ice-breaker exercise.. something that will be fun, educational, with team-building focus. We'll probably use them on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. You can search the internet for ideas, remember those that you may have used elsewhere, or wait until we talk on Monday. I want the team to see you as the "go to" people and also as people who have fun!"

I'm stumped as of right now, so I'm looking to the wisdom of the CEG for some ideas.. Hit me with anything you've got.. Thanks!

Well, its not team-building or real educational, but in high school for an ice-breaker, one of my teachers passed around, yes, a roll of toilet paper and told everyone to take however much they wanted. After everyone had something to wipe with, each person had to tell 1 thing about themselves for every square they took. If your new employees like toilet humor, that might be a start! hehe

...and for my exercise we are going to go to a big party. There we will get drunk, dance, and drink some more! Some of us will get lucky, others will not. Then we will all pass out on the floor!

Oh wait, thats what I am doing tonite. shocked

Try the telephone game.

You line everyone up and you have a sentance that you whisper to the first person. They wisper it to the next person in line, and so forth.

Have the last person say out loud what you told the first person. Compare that to what you originally told the first person.

The point, the more information gets passed from person to person, the more it differs from the original. Everyone hears and repeats it differently.

Some sorta multi-player game, ala TF or RTCW.

OR

Take everyone to a local bar, or a TGI Fridays (or Chilies) and get boozed up. Have everyone on the team swap stories and learn about each other. Just pretend it's educational. Then again, that may be a tad socialable for a bunch of IT guys wink
