The more money the military sees, the less money is spent on public programs. This could include everything from welfare, to lother programs that affect everyone. So if the current state of our country is ignored, and more money is spent on military items, then as a result the state of country would detiorate. So then if there is nothing left, what are we defending?
Total military expenditures is around 50 percent, and that is after it has increased dramatically recently. Problem is I wouldn't be suprised if it keeps on rising as long as Bush is in office  . We are bombing countries everyday in the countries in the east, and that costs millions. Those millions could have gone to public schooling, or dare I say it, welfare, social security, and unemployment recipients. Careful what you say Demon, I know there are a few people on this website that fall into the latter two mentioned.
On that subject, I believe the government is trying to put the burden of financing public schools in the hands of the individual state governments. If I am correct this did not pass through congress, but if paints a nice picture of where the priorities within the government are.
Sure we got attacked, and I feel very sorry for all those lost in the september 11th attack, and I do not want to say anything that would disrespect those who are lost. Do you really think that if we kill Osama Bin Laden, that the whole Alcheida terrorist organization will crumble? The whole network is not structured to rely on one person, Osama gets killed, they go on.
