Alright, tell me what you think of this idea I've got. In the local paper, someone has a '77 Porsche for sale. The description is very brief, just says: Porsche '77 - 5 spd. White, $1,000.
So I'm thinking that as long as the thing runs fairly well and the body is in good condition, it would be worth buying. I think it would be cool as hell to say "Yea I've got a Porsche." I'd probably leave me tour as it is though if I got this. Just drive it on nice days and wipe off the dust with a diaper.
I know its not the most sane idea, but I'm a bit of a dreamer. So tell me what you think. If thinks its a good idea let me know, if you think its a bad idea....well try to be alittle polite about it.

It would be cool... but... Do you really wanna know how much Porsche parts and service cost? I am still in shock from rotary parts cost. It would be better if you could find an old Corvette. Similar gee whiz factor, but with much better parts availability. Still would be cool, though. $0.02 ------------------ James '95 Mark VIII '98 Contour SVT '80 RX-7 S [This message has been edited by '95 Mark VIII (edited April 23, 2001).]

Parts and service would cost an arm and a leg i'm sure. That's why I'd make sure it was running fairly well now. Not about to start and restore anything from the ground up.
I don't know about Corvettes though, the new ones are really nice, my neighbors have 2 of them I think. I like the old ones from the '60s as well. Corvettes can be expensive on parts and service as well. One of my dad's friends was restoring one. He decided it was going to be way to much for him to restore it to the orginal condition. This coming from a guy I consider to be doing fairly well money wise. His wife drives a '95 Corvette or something similar to that year.
How much have you had to put into the RX-7 to keep it running well??

For $1,000 it's probably a 914.
That's the mid-engined 4-cyl. that many Porsche enthusiasts look down on as being a Volkswagen. As I recall it was developed as a joint project with VW.
Could be a 924 also. Front-engined 4-cyl, ditto.
Not saying don't do it, but make sure it's really worth $1,000. Even at the price it may not be a good deal...

My first guess would be a 924, I've seen many around here in pretty bad shape. Still, it would be cool to have a Porsche. Get a good paintjob and as long as it ran OK nobody would know it's a POS. I say go see it, and if it seems to drive OK offer him $600 and see what happens.

What conclusion did you come to? Did ya get to go and look the Porsche over? Inquiring minds want to know. After tires, battery, exhaust, cd player, and accelerator pump diaphram, I am still less than a grand in the car. One thing is for sure, I wish I were more mechanically capable. It would make repair costs considerably less if I could do the work myself. Duh. Drop us a line and let everyone know whats up. Almost forgot. The secret to affordable parts for a Corvette, is to not tell them it is a Corvette. Many parts are also used on F bodies and other V-8 GM cars. In most cases, they are the exact same part number. When I had to replace a motor mount on the '85 Corvette I had, the dealer quoted me a price over the phone of something like $60 for the part. When I went to the dealership to get one, I told them I needed one for a 87 GTA (Trans AM) at the suggestion of an auto savvy friend. $25. It was a perfect fit, and saved me the $35 Corvette Tariff. Now I know why service managers eyes light up when you ask about service for a Vette. ------------------ James '95 Mark VIII '98 Contour SVT '80 RX-7 S [This message has been edited by '95 Mark VIII (edited April 23, 2001).]

I'm going to call about it tomorrow and try to go look at it. I found another dent in the tour today, so I'm a bit pissed off about that. Maybe I should invest in some portable guard rails to put around my car when its parked!!
