It does use a flipper handle but perhaps a knob from another year would fit and be easier to adjust.
Total parts cost $87 and well worth it imho.
It might be worth looking into a seat panel that already has the cutout for the controller to snap into (perhaps on the '95-'97 tours you mention)? My guesstimate is that the part would not cost more than $20.
Default or lowest setting of the lumbar adjustment offers more support than the stock unit. I feel more in control of the wheel as I do not shift around in the seat as much anymore.
