keeping pollen and dust out of the interior, i'd imagine. doesn't do a whole lot of good when you drive w/ the windows and sunroof open all the time like i do, and if you don't change it every 20-25k miles it'll start to get kinda funky....just changed mine for the 3rd time yesterday @ 46k. already grayish-black in only about 16k miles...
