I would be willing to bet (a small sum) that the hood gets more heat (and abuse) from solar radiation than it does from the engine.
I am not worried one whit about my engine "baking" the paint.
The only way to settle the issue, however, would be to measure the surface temperature on a hot, sunny, Kansas summer day both before and after running the engine.

The purpose of the liner is safety. If an egine fire starts the plastic rivets melt and the liner( which is made of flame retardent materials) will fall and smother the flames. That is probably why so much heat stays in the engine bay.

I took mine out of my 95 SE and noticed that it runs a bit cooler and there is a bit LESS heat soak! I think this gets mixed results. But it is a lot louder now!

A few ideas:
1) What if I removed my liner and replaced it with Dynomat? I would think I could kill the noise and reduce temps as well.
2) If you remove the weatherstripping against the cowl, it creates even more airflow
3) What about removing the headliner, putting in some dynomat, adding the heat sheild on the intake, AND adding some heat extractors/hood slits for either cold/ram air induciton?
I think that #3 would be the hot (not literally!) ticket as it would ensure the air was cool going in the intake, and sound would be controlled as well.

Most people forget that one of the reasons that the hood liner is there is to protect the paint on the hood. If it gets too hot it can start to peel and crack. Try an aftermarket hoodliner like the one from dynamat.

My top of the hood temp was actually hotter with the hood liner installed than with it removed.
Underhood temps were considerably lower with it removed.
Win/win...
BTW - if the engine caught fire the hood liner would not put it out... It definitely would not "drop" It rests on the engine as is...
Maybe??? put out an open carburetor fire, but this isn't the old days...

Most people in the forum have removed the liner and not noticed and paint bubbles or ware marks. It's useless except for sound deadening.
The weather stripping around the top of the hood will come in very handy during the winter to keep water and ice out of your coil which sits right near that edge.
