Those weren't my instructions.. It may well be possible to get the strut/spring unit out of the car w/o the spring compressor, but it'll be a whole lot easier if you do have it on there
Stuff will go flying if you try to remove the hat w/o the spring compressed. There is ALOT of energy stored in that spring.
