I thought that the earlier Zetecs had 5 more hp because that is what the VCT took off. I also heard that the earlier cars have a meaner cam then the later/VCT cars.
I know my car sounds meaner with almost the same type of intake my brothers ZX2 has. I was using ZX2 parts and steel tubing, feeding into the accordion pipe, MAF and stock airbox with a Ford paper filter. Hes running the ZX2 elbow, steel tubing, the ZX2s stock plastic piping, into its airbox/MAF and then a K&N air filter.
Oh, the Mondeo's have the Zetec, Duratec, and a diesel.

'91-'96 EGT had the Mazda 1.8 DOHC.
Older European Mondeo's had 1.8 and 2.0 DOHC Zetecs. 2.0 came in both VCT and non-VCT flavor. Some early Zetec 2.0 only had 125 HP. The highest official HP rating for a European Zetec I have found is 136 HP.
(The European Puma ST160 had a 155 HP 1.7 DOHC Zetec-S. This was a special Yamaha built version of the Zetec-S. the standard Puma had a 1.7 DOHC Zetec with 125 HP.)
Current Mondeo's have a Duratec 2.3 DOHC I4 available. I believe this is a common motor between Ford and Mazda. It is installed in the current Ford Ranger.
1st gen Probe/MX6 had a 2.2 SOHC 12-valve motor in turbo and non-turbo flavors.
2nd gen probe/MX6 had a 2.0 DOHC Mazda motor in 115/130 HP forms.
Current Protege5 has a 2.0 DOHC 130/140 HP motor.
Hope this helps...

VCT let Ford use more aggressive cams in an emissions controlled engine. Compare the ZX2 cams and the Focus cams
Intake: ZX2 (VCT) 214 deg @ 0.050", 0.367" lift Focus 205 deg @ 0.050, 0.352" lift
Exhaust ZX2 (VCT) 212 deg @ 0.050", 0.338" lift (exact duration not verified, yet) Focus 206 deg @ 0.050", 0.343" lift
The VCT advances the exhaust cam 30 crank degrees under certain conditions, including low rpm. This reduces overlap and improves low end torque. VCT also allowed Ford to use longer duration cams in an emissions controlled engine.
If you are building a non-emissions motor the VCT isn't going to help performance (except maybe improve low-mid torque in a road course racing application.)
However, if you need to meet emissions testing, VCT will let you use longer duration cams, especially at lower rpm, before emissions become a problem.
