I believe the pre98's are setup similiar to the 98+ regarding the TACH/odometer. If thats the case then you can remove the entire speedo/odometer guage from behind the face and swap between the two. Thats what I did for mine...no issues so far. The early cars may have some differences though.

Email me and I'll send a pic of the two speedos from my two clusters...I'll bet your speedos have similiar(if not identical) part numbers as mine do. IIRC both of the circuit boards for my speedos have a 96 part number....errrr...engineering number...whatever you wanna call it.
