Its all about HP per weight ratio. The small rice burner types can be as fast as the heavier muscle cars because they weigh 1,000 lbs less. However, the smaller 4 cylinder engines have to work a lot harder to achieve the same HP as a V8 and will wear out faster. For my tastes, I would rather have the smoothness and grunt of a V8 Camaro or Mustang beneath me rather than the shaking, screaming buzz-bomb of a 4 cylinder. Also, I'd rather be in a bulkier Camaro or Mustang than a light weight Civic should I get into an accident. The Zetec is a decent contemporary engine, and the new SVT Focus has squeezed a lot of HP from it.

omg, i haven't checked this thread for like four days, and you guys are still posting to it? i think some of you need to get a life and get off the keyboard for a while.
and for those of you who are taking some of my quotes out of context about respect for the zetec, you need to re-read my original post (if you know how to read at all). i like it for what it was built for-good mpg, long life, decent performance for a crappy 4-banger with no size or breathability.
i dont respect it for anything concerning torque, horsepower, drag racing, throw you back in the seat acceleration, etc. sure, you can dump $20000 into it and make it fast, but do you even really have a zetec left after this is done? no. a zetec doesn't come with a turbo. a true wrencher will make one's car fast WITHOUT adding a turbo or s/c. maybe cutting the intake in half and honing the inside out to a mirror finish, stuff like that. cams, pistons, larger air intake, exhaust. this turbo crap on an engine that doesn't even offer one as an option is ludicrous to even brag about. that's like an indy car asking to race in a formula 1 race. or a corvette owner bringing his turbo's or s/c'd C5 to a corvette meet bragging how fast it is when everyone else has the original engine. sure its fast, but its not really an LT1 engine or whatever they use now. if you want to brag about how fast your zetec is, do so without saying "oh, i put a turbo on mine", or "when i get my turbo on, i may be able to smoke a Mark VIII." it just isn't impressive. now, when you take an oem turbo engine, and make IT faster, then ill respect you. but adding one to a car that doesn't even come with one, WHO CARES. that's cheating. i could add a turbo to a taurus wagon and smoke your turbo's zetec. then i also wouldn't look like every other contique owner either.
you guys are way too much fun. like i said, re-read my original post. i thought i was somewhat stating my position and apologizing somewhat for what you you guys took wrong in the first place. guess not. it is all my opinion.

London could use some more emissions rules... for diesel. I just read a thingy saying that London's air has more cancer-causing smog than New York or LA, due to using more diesel engines. The car companies are trying to use "Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle" standards to distract us from the real environmental need, which is mainly just to reduce total fuel consumption.
