It does but it's possible to over do it, 3k sounds about right mine will only go higher when I manually shift.
Try this:
1) Start in first gear(1) (Don't floor the car when you take off only like 1/2-3/4 seems to have a better response
2) manually shift into second(2) at about 30-35mph and floor it (don't let off the gas)
3) slap third(D) at about 55-60mph
