I also use 94 octane and I race all the time with no knocking or pinging!  I was thinking of putting in some Octane Boost also but if these engines are "fussy" with octane, I will leave the Octane Boost out of the tank! :rolleyes: My guess would be that it is not fuel octane related. Perhaps the sensors/sendors as others have sugested! I'd pull the temp gauge sender, and test it to see if it's reading low. Make sure the coolant temps aren't actually too high. I'd recheck static and ign timing also. Stephen

I don't think its pinging. What does it sound like when it does ping? If it happens in warm weather and heavy engine load, it's definitely pinging, and dangerous. Maybe check the rest of the EGR system. Make sure there isn't a pipe clogged with carbonized gunk or something. Maybe look inside the cylinder with a tiny mirror or something, see if it's clean in there. Plus whatever the other guys think up.

my zetec won't run on anything other than regular 87 octane. if i put ethanol in it, it runs like crap. never used premium. no need to in these engines. what you gonna gain, a little less vibration at idle while in drive? i doubt it. 30 mpg a tank and still sailin'. :p

Hey Corey !! Checking the Zetecs now ???  Planning to get the real thing ???  I had the wires / plugs changed.. less than 10k... About the popcorn sound... I was going to say that... but i thought that was very silly to say... but it does sound like that.. i mean... not exactly....

When I really run mine hard, it has that "popcorn" sound, but it sounds like it comes from where the glovebox is, like behind it. Is that the same as what you all are talking about??
