I don't think its pinging. What does it sound like when it does ping?
If it happens in warm weather and heavy engine load, it's definitely pinging, and dangerous.
Maybe check the rest of the EGR system. Make sure there isn't a pipe clogged with carbonized gunk or something. Maybe look inside the cylinder with a tiny mirror or something, see if it's clean in there. Plus whatever the other guys think up.
