I used mechanical. There is a blanked off second oil sender location about 3" to the rear of the used one

You have two 1/4" NPT ports on the intake side of the block.
Unless you use a mechanical pressure gauge with threaded fittings, use an electrical gauge. The mech gauges with plastic/nylon capillary tubes are potential engine killers.

Mines copper piping (TIM) so its unlikely to melt like the plastic ones

If the plastic or the guage ever fails, your engine sprays its oil all over the ground, or in some cases, all over your leg. That's why manufacturers stopped including them.

I had to replace all bottom end bearings on my Zetec after a plastic oil pressure gauge split at the block fitting. Ironically I'd never trusted those with plastic lines, but I was holding off on replacing it till discretionary income was available. I'm now using one of those SPA oil temp/pressure combo gauges that also incorporates warning LEDs.At 5-6 bar, the sump is emptied very quickly.
For a mechanical app, do as Madmole recommends.

What worried me is how low the oil pressure has to be before the Ford warning light comes on. Basically the damage is done way before it lights up

You guys who damaged your engine's were not obviously watching the oil pressure guage then wink wink

Just for info, when cold my oil pressure is 80 psi
when hot idle is 30psi and revs are 60psi
Hot is 80C on freeway, 90C town, max 100C in traffic (Oil cooler fitted)
