How many miles do you have on it? I took my contour into the dealership and they put washers inbetween the cover and the engine to give it seperation, cheap but it worked. But make sure the timing belt doesnt need replacing first.

I believe most of mine was due to the age of the car. Mine started ticking at about 80,000. At roughly 85,000 I removed the cover, and at 95K it got a new belt. It is still coverless though, 100K.

i did the "washer mod" to my cover....works and only you know it is there, unless you come on a worldwide board like myself and tell everyone you have them!

Exdelayed did you find any differences after you took off the cover? like power, whistling, vibrations or anything else?

Insert washers between upper plastic cover and lower lip on lower plastic cover. All done. I did this on my wife?s Zetec and its all nice and quiet now.

It seems to me that it could be very bad if it should happen that a small foreign object of any kind ? such as a piece of gravel kicked up from the road, or a leaf, or a stray washer that might get dropped during the ?washer mod? ? might fall into the timing belt area. Leaving the cover off seems like a bad idea to me.

Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

How many washers did you use? And what size? It's getting cold out, and I don't want to stand there trying a bunch of times to find the right combo...
96 Green Mystique Zetec ATX No mods yet (wife's car but I drive it all the time)
