I shift mostly by feel. I also use my hearing as reference, but it turns out that I have one or more bad wheel bearings, so hearing the motor can be a little tricky at times.

my car is a 99 Cougar, I don't know if it is the same tranny....but there is a rev-limiter at 7200 rpm's. The max HP is at 5500. When racing, I usually shift at about 6000, then hold 3rd out to about 6500. Don't get to run 4th up as high usually.
