Where can I buy, or find info on how to make, a cam locking tool? I need to do the timing belt, and looks like I need this tool to make life easier. Does this tool work in conjunction with the camshaft pullys? If so, can I get away without removing the valve cover?
Only for the historians:
I (with a help of a mechanic friend) did mines without the tool (and removing the camshaft cover), just by marking the sprockets together with paint.
They moved about 1/8 rotation when we removed the belt (by valve springs I guess), we turned them back by hand and put on the
new belt.
It worked (I did some 20k miles since then), so I say you can do it without the aligning tool, but next time I wouldn't try without it, esp. if you're doing it alone.
Much less trouble and much more peace of mind
