You may laugh at the Insight or Prius now, but I bet by 2005 hybrid-electrics are going to start being very important in performance circles, especially in street drag racing. Electric motors can add huge amounts of torque, especially in low revs. A heavier-duty hybrid electric can probably be faster off the line than any conventional engine of the same weight.

The ultimate car for super high mileage is probably a hybrid, but not of gasoline and electricity... a hybrid of diesel and steam. Steam power from exhaust heat could be the ultimate fuel saver... but it would only work after the car was fully warmed up.
