You actually want a long smooth tube. the longer length gives the air time to settle and stabilise into a more laminar flow.
I agree also that you want a cold as possible air going into that tube.
The Manifold uner the TB is absolutely crap, but as nobody yet does a replacement we are stuck with it.
Best answer is 4 direct throttle body injectors (like the Weber Alpha kit)that does away with the whole lot but its very expensive

Would such de-turbulencizing be all for naught once the air hits the bad quadruple-saxophone manifold, or would such a thing really gain you some horsepower? I'm thinking of just getting a smooth right-angle bend and straight section of plastic sewer pipe of a suitable diameter. (Plastic so it doesn't conduct heat.) Then, maybe, the e-Ram in the wheelwell...

There is a replacement for the manifold. Its just too damned expensive. I saw a hi-po intake manifold in the Ford Preformance catalog that goes for $500 IIRC.  Its listed for the Focus and ZX2, but Im sure it would fit. Anyone wanna lend me $500??
