'97 mystique (the good ones with a tach and a rear dome light, hehe) zetec auto.- 86K, no problems with anything at all. 31 mpg and everything is stock except for battery and serpentine belt. stock timing belt even. the usual filter changes have taken place, but everything mechanical is stock. very reliable car except for the rattling suspension. it does not burn a drop of oil either. i would like to have the 2.5 though. sweet and smooth V6. shocked

i will always have a comeback! :o)

Looks like I'm still the high-mileage champ, having about 116K (almost 117K) miles on my Zetec.  I thought I might be second, when I saw SoupMan claiming 117K, but then I realized he was talking kilometers, rather than miles, so his 117K is really only about 72K or 73K.  Mine's running great, with no significant problems, and not burning a drop of oil.

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX.  No mods. (Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

Blown head gasket at 55K. Head warped, block also needed resurfacing of top deck, which was not properly finished at the factory. Idler pulley of timing belt was found to be badly worn. Cheap flexplate with hollow stamped sheet-metal gear teeth wrecked by broken starter. (The Ford replacement part has solid gear teeth.) One very small burr on crankshaft, easily smoothed out. Everything else in good condition.

96 GL Zetec ATX, white with pinstripe, nickname " Sam Smooth "
mods so far: CTA intake with homemade heat shield, KVR drilled front rotors & carbon pads w/ 500° fluid
planned mods: exhaust (want to keep it quiet), e-ram (awaiting installation), diablo chip
involuntary mods: compression increased after head gasket failure

Between 50-60K miles, I had some problems. One was the alternator was tested to be low and had to get a new one. Then, the ABS module died, but I got a nice discount on the replacement after complaining to Ford CS.

The last major repair was the Check Engine light came on and I needed a new MAF intake.

Since then I only replaced the timing belt cover, since it rubbed on the pully in the cold. I am now at 75300 miles and it seems fine now.

I put in new plugs awhile ago and am debating about getting a new timing belt.

2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO.
Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!
