Plugs today don't need to be regapped, matter of fact you're likely to damage them. Checking the gap is really only needed after they've been used and look worn, just to verify their spec...then again, most specs I've seen in books are wrong.
It's more than likely you're serpentine belt or probably the timing belt if you have more than 50K miles.
