Barry, I haven't done this, but I think what they mean is that you loosen the screw enough to move the motor away from the plate it mounts to (towards the front of the car) and insert some type of shim on that side b/w the motor and plate so when you tighten the screw it holds the shim in place.

Speed Demons, if there's a grinding noise that must mean the motor's fine and the main plastic gear is stripped. In that case, I would forget about the nut and take the motor out completely and look at the condition of the main gear. If that gear looks ok, try the moonroof with the motor out and see if it spins freely when you hit the button. If it works fine, you could try and grab the motor's gear (lightly with pliers and a rag maybe) and see if it turns under a load. If it still works fine, you've got to have a gear problem or something else in the guts of the opener.
