We are talking about the phillips head screw that is shown in the picture. Correct? How do you shim without taking out? I am missing something here. Sorry.

Ok you got me all excited and wet to go home and work on my damm moonroof. Natha! Is that how you spell that? Oh well, no luck i loosened the screw, i banged on it, even sweet talked it to come back to life, nothing. It moves a little and than starts that grinding noise. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Barry, I haven't done this, but I think what they mean is that you loosen the screw enough to move the motor away from the plate it mounts to (towards the front of the car) and insert some type of shim on that side b/w the motor and plate so when you tighten the screw it holds the shim in place.

Speed Demons, if there's a grinding noise that must mean the motor's fine and the main plastic gear is stripped. In that case, I would forget about the nut and take the motor out completely and look at the condition of the main gear. If that gear looks ok, try the moonroof with the motor out and see if it spins freely when you hit the button. If it works fine, you could try and grab the motor's gear (lightly with pliers and a rag maybe) and see if it turns under a load. If it still works fine, you've got to have a gear problem or something else in the guts of the opener.

Hope that helps a little.

It is the phillips screw you loosten and keep it loose, I didnt remove mine, I just loosened it, however its a good idea to you some lock tight to keep that screw on so it won't fall out and it will still remain loose.

Here is what happened to mine, and probably most of you people as well...

Notice the right side of the gear that has a chunk melted/ground out of it.

And here is a way to fix it...

See those two screws holding the bas of the motor to the frame? Get some washers and place them between the motor and the frame, putting the screws through them. This will lift the motor up, closer to the "not-so-eaten" part of the gear. I will be trying my new fix out soon.

As you can see, by performing the first fix as stated by DJBillyHoe and mklarko, you are not really moving the worm gear closer to the gear, you are simply moving it to another section of the gear. My fix does essentially the same thing. I'm just moving the motor, as opposed to tilting the motor.

I'll keep you posted if my fix works.

I just did my fix to alleviate the binding problem the cables have when they get hot. This is why it eats the gears or the motor! It's adds a tiny "cushion" so the cables do not bind without throwing the motor alignment off. (or atleast mine is straight)
