Does anyone have any suggestion on how to modify the existing fan system on the Zetec in order to reduce the abnormally high reading on the temp gauge My gauge is always reading on the high side A-L and despite all I have read I am not convinced that this is normal. For instance can a resistor be placed in line to deceive the computer that the engine is at normal operating temp thus causing the fan to turn on? Any suggestions guys

I am no way a Auto Computer Expert but I think that adding a Resistor may be the simple route but may cause more problems. I beleive the computer controls alot of other items in the car based on the temp. Things such as Air/Fuel Mixture and others. You would have to put the resistor on the Temp sender unit which sends the current temp to the computer for fan and other things. The only correct way that I would think is to have a Ford Dealer reprogram the computer internally to start the fan ealier. I think I had heard some one on this group say that Ford did it for them but that was a long time ago.

Thanks.

as i have said in other threads, my car runs arounf the 'A' in NORMAL all the time. from 95 degree summers to -15 degree winters. once the engine is warm, it is on A.

Arg! Someone else setteled this in the problems forum i think.
Dont worry about what letter your zetec runs on! What matters is the temperature it runs at, which is fine. As i always say, as long as your not in the red, your're cool. If you ever actually get to the red, then start worrying.

Perfectly normal if it's in the NORMAL . There is a TSB for this and it states not to fix anything, that the thermostat should not be replaced or changed to a lower temp and this is normal for the Zetec Contiques. If you want to feel better, take off the guage needle and when it's at the A (normal) put the needle back on directly in the middle. When I put on my BNM guages, I did just that. FWIW John

My Mondeo sits at the "O" in NORMAL when I'm
crusing on the highway, and will come up to
the "A" when in stop-start city traffic.

If you really want to know if it is OK, get a thermometer or known acuurate temp gauge that is calibrated in degrees and measure
the actual temp when it is at the usual
reading for your car.

Thanks for the response guys, however, I am still not satisfied that this should be accepted as a normal condition. For instance why did Ford choose to use one fan for both a/c and engine cooling something that no other car manufacturer does and they themselves changed with the 1998 model. I would be very interested in knowing what difference the installation of twin fan on the 1998 model made to the temperature readings and it?s overall performance, in addition, does any know whether the conversation to twin fans is feasible and what will be required

I read your profile and since you're in Jamaica, I would suggest a lower temp thermostat first. Try some Redline Water Wetter in the coolant also. It improves the heat transfer properties of the coolant.
The fans come on via a temp switch which is an on/off thing so you can't put in any resistors anywhere. The temp guage is a seperate thermistor (temp dependent resistor) that also feds the ECU information. Playing with this will only screw up your guage and fuel injection air/fuel mix.
At what point of NORMAL does your fan come on? Putting in two fans will only help keep temps from going above this spot, it will not lower them. It may keep things a bit cooler with the A/C on though. HTH.

what are the years of this cars that are doing this? or does it matter? i have a 99 contour and the needle would sit say 1/4 away from the "c" so would that make my car abnormal or some one in the production line was smoking something funny at time of installing this stuff
