2.3L OHC Turbocharged/intercooled
why? because the rods are made out of real steel, not the powdered sh!t in most of the motors you guys listed. Five Main caps, capable of withstanding 400 Turbocharged HP on stock rods and pistons with maybe some aftermarket rod bolts for insurance.
A real piece of american iron (literally) too bad they never put two of these together for a 800HP 4.6L sohc motor instead of that P.O.S. mod motor Ford makes now.

Excuse me ,but there is no P/M s**t in a Cosworth ...its the 'KING' of 4 cylinders.
(by the way I had an Sapphire Cossie before I came to the US,missed so bad!)

The cosworth is a good engine, but the 2.3 turbo is a far superior engine. With stock internals I have seen 400 to 450 hp engines. I built one with minor modifications to the bottom end that was well over 450 hp pulled to 7500 rpm and still ran on pump gas. Not to mention the torque with the 2.3 turbo is there. The cossie doesn't even begin to make power till higher in the rpm range. Again, the cossie is a great engine, but for the street/strip crowd that wants to run low 10;s, the 2.3 is better.

The 2.3 has nowhere near the race wins as the Cosworth 2.0,not even close!

Ford Europe used the XR4Ti(ie 2.3l) in touring car racing before the Cosworth was developed(without any real success). When the Cosworth and RS 500 came along the FIA had to alter the regulations to stop the Ford`s from winning
Also the Cosworth engine has been used by Ford in the World Rally Championship. In this championship torque is of vital importance.

This is not to knock down the 2.3 since this appears to be a very solid and tuneable engine. And I guess that $ for $ you would get a fairly competitive 2.3(due to cheap parts... )

But Cosworth is KING (IMHO)

Which engine builder has had more F1/race/rally wins than any other engine in history?
COSWORTH....check the F1 engine history.In my early days at FMC we used to rebuild the F1 Ford / Cosworth at the same time the 2.0 was being developed.I have seen both these engines run on countless hours of dyno testing.The original 2.0 Cosworth had it own 'unique' cylinder block('200' cast in) and was not a 'pinto' bottom end.Some 'fake 2.0 Cossies use the pinto block but its not the same casting.I used to build the race 2.0 Cossies,its bomb proof!

I remember this post, I was looking for turbo ztec info and I compleatly forgot about my old post!

Terry, yep, Cossie is an AMAZING motor. I got to drive one some years back. Work of ART! $ per hp 2.3 win's for the street/stip boys. And the 2.3 turbo is a differenct casting then the pinto bottom end.

Now if you want to go into maximum hp acchieveable in a race motor I'll have to give it up to the cossie. WOW ART! Infact, how would we bolt one into a ztec car? hmmmm, a Cossie Contour ... I must have a fever b/c I'm REALLY A SICK PERSON! :p

For around $12000 I can get you a 'Cossie!,but you may want to settle for an HMS Inc 300 BHP 'Turbo Zetec'.....
