Ford Europe used the XR4Ti(ie 2.3l) in touring car racing before the Cosworth was developed(without any real success). When the Cosworth and RS 500 came along the FIA had to alter the regulations to stop the Ford`s from winning
Also the Cosworth engine has been used by Ford in the World Rally Championship. In this championship torque is of vital importance.

This is not to knock down the 2.3 since this appears to be a very solid and tuneable engine. And I guess that $ for $ you would get a fairly competitive 2.3(due to cheap parts... )

But Cosworth is KING (IMHO)
