definitely the 2.5 four in the porsche 944 turbos. those cars were freaking insane at the time, and still are pretty wild

The best production four banger would have to be the 2.0L VTEC four in the Honda S2000 although the 1.8L VTEC in the Integra Type R ain't shabby.
As for non-production four, my vote is for the Ford Escort Cosworths turbo 4cyl. Fast!!!!

that sounds pretty awesome

The strongest production 4 sold in the US (I think) was the 300HP Lotus 2.2L Turbo in the Esprit - which was wickedly fast.
I was pleased to see a vote for the MR2 turbo motor (I used to own). Only 200HP stock but 200Lb/ft and easily tunable to 300+ HP and possible to tune past 450 HP!
The S2000 motor is just unreal though- 240 HP from a N/A 2L that hits 9000RPM!

I say the Volkswagen/Audi 1.8L Turbo. There are so many variations of that motor it's unbelievable! You can go anywhere from 150hp (Golf GTi 1.8T) up to 225hp (Audi TT Quattro Coupe/Conv.) Thats pretty impressive. It's used in so many cars that i'd say its the most versatile and the best 4 cylinder engine on the planet!

Has anyone driven an S2000. I drove one and the torque curve is horrible. The 240hp in the M coupe feels much better (I know V6). I didn't really like the S2000. You REALLY have to keep the RPMs up for it to be fast. It doesn't paste you to the seat like I would like. But still 240hp from 4cyl. is a great feat.

As the owner of a 1988 Sierra Cosworth I would like to put down a vote for the YBB to YBP 2.0 Cosworth engine.

This engine can be modified to give over 500HP. Most common output when tuned is in the region of 270-350HP

Sorry about all the pics...

A few photos of the engine(taken from www.grahamgoode.com )

Here`s a Ford press photo of my car(same colour etc)

Here are a select few that has been modified(taken from various sites)
