I think that you may get a surprise from your buddies Grand Am. The old rounded body style ones with the 3.1 litre 6 may look slow but I used to have a Sunbird with the 3.1 litre and it was quick. It may have a laughably low redline and run out of breath above 4 grand but the torque that thing puts out can light up the tires of an ATX. I did.
On the other hand, the new (quite sharp looking I must say) GA's are usually equipped with a wussy 2.4 litre 4, the same as in the laughable Cavalier Z24. They'll probably be slow but I think the top of the line GT's get a six, a thoroughly modern one at that. I'd check first to see you don't get embarrased.
As for racing, have two takes. Stoplight I will usually stick to BMW 318i's and 320's and Audi 1.8T's. But on the freeway and offramps, favored prey are these pathetic 80's Cutlass supremes and the like. I love passin' em and just schoolin' em on the twisty offramps. Even better are old 70's and 80's Chev pickups that are all slammed with fat rubber. They handle even worse, no anti roll bars and that pathetic live rear axle. Clowns.
And to top it off, I had one of these hick trucks raced me on the freeway. The poor schmuck could only hit 140 km/h (85mph) as I cruised to 180 km/h until I backed off, laughing all the way.
