I agree, I've had:
stock Firestone 205/60-R15
stock BFGoodrich KDWs 215/50-R16
Yokohama Avid H4s 215/60-R15
Dunlop SP5000 215/50-R15
Falken Azenis 215/45R-16
And I think the Dunlops were the best all-around tire I've owned. I was impressed with their ability in dry conditions, but also in snowy conditions. Granted, they're not snow tires.
They also seem to hold up well to hard use... I've used them in auto-x and hard driving and they held up remarkably well.
Oddly enough, the tirerack guy (Buddy) talked me out of this tire and into some Bridgestone Potenzas - but when I showed up at the tire shop to get my car I found my car shod in Dunlops... Somebody at the tirerack was smoking something.
Hope this helps --
