Took off the Blizzacks (mounted on steel wheels) about two weeks ago, put the stock E0's back on. Torqued 'em carefully. On the way home from work today I noticed a periodic 'thump' at low speeds and a 'knock' on turns. Found ALL 8 front wheel lug nuts loose - as in several turns each. I guess it is true - with aluminum wheels you're supposed to check/retorque after about 100 miles.

According to my tire guy, alloy wheels should be checked 100 miles after they are installed. I'm sure this goes for factory alloys as well.

I can't say I check the lugs 100 miles after a wheel gets pulled, but I've never had this problem (yet - knock on wood). What causes lugs on an alloy wheel to go loose after a short time? Just wondering, not that I doubt I should check them.

My OZ's came loose, so I now believe in check them a day or two or 100 miles after installing/re-installing.

Yes, I belive the correct procedure is to check at 100 miles, and if you tighten them any, to recheck again at another 100 miles. I'll be bringing my torque wrench to SZ, checking periodically on my new wheels.

Can someone explain the science behind why this is? Does it have to do with contraction/expansion of the metal alloy or what?

Hey, all you have to do is tighten them with a torque wrench around 85 pounds. You shouldn't have any problems at all then.....

Geesh. I thought this was only true for new aluminum wheels.
According to tirerack, the load-bearing metal around the lug holes may actually compress a bit, but once this is done, I didn't think it would happen again.
Lucky for me, I've never had this happen on my stock wheels, although I have noticed new wheels get a little loose the first time.

i also thought/heard that it was only for first time mounting. and only for alloys, as yes, the first time the metal can compress enough to give room for the nuts to back off.
but i make a habit of checking them after 100 miles and each time i change the oil.
good luck! and torque safe! :-)
