Added to the fact that I had 235/40/17's on my car last year (this summer again too) and had more than enough room after the fenderwell was tucked. 245's shouldn't be a problem with the right offset.
Your tire guy is right though, no way they'ed fit on the stock rims with their 49mm offset... well, not without a hubcentric spacer of course...
