You also have to watch out for certain wheel cleaners. I have tried soooo many cleaners to try to get the brake dust off, and one of those cleaners have made my 8 spokes spotty. It looks like the finish is starting to wear off. I always used a soft sponge when cleaning, but I think a harsh cleaner(I think it was Meguires Instant Wheel Cleaner, or their Hot Rims Cleaner) is what did it. I currently use Simple Green in the aerosol can, and it works great. I may have to take Big Jims advice and wax them. Do you think that would help my wheels look less spotty?

Often it does.

Also you need to avoid any wheel cleaners that are acid based, sush as "Wheel Brite". Whatever cleaner you use, make sure the wheels are not hot. It helps to spray them off with cold water before using any cleaner. Don't leave any cleaner on too long (I never do more than two wheels at a time, and usually only one at a time). Rince thoroughly with cold water when done.

In caring for your wheels, keep in mind that the factory finish is essentually the same thing as the base coat / clear coat finish on your paint. The finish responds to the same things that the paint on your car body does. The wheels are exposed to much harsher conditions though.

The best way to avoid brake dust buildup is to avoid using the brakes.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I have waxed my wheels and that helps, but I think the best product I have tried is made by rain-x. Once your wheels are are really clean, you spray this rain-x wheel spray on. I think it is silicone based. Helps, but it is not a cure all.
