Ok, I understand rims from the listed cars will fit a Contour, but is the offset correct? I am looking to get some steel 14" rims for winter tires, need to know what to look for at the junk yard. Thanks.

The Merkur Encyclopedia has a pretty good table to get you started. Scroll down the left side menu to the link that says "Wheels." It'll give you offsets for Merkurs (all at 41mm) and Tempos (42mm). What it doesn't tell you is that our stock offset is 40mm.

Sounds like if you just want to run narrow winter tires, you should be fine with any stock XR4Ti wheel.

If you have an SVT, you will need at least 15s to clear the brakes.

Well, nothing, but I figure he wants to increase his chances of finding them at the salvage yard.

Geez fellas, I have a plain Jane '97 stock 4cyl with three options: AM/FM cassette, rear defog and air conditioning. No frills transportation. Maybe I will use my steel rims for my snows and get some 15" alloy rims this spring. I like to keep my car looking low key, because I do speed alot, and I get pulled less often in a plain looking car. Has saved me lots of tickets and lots-O-cash! But I think some nice SVT rims would be nice next spring, have to see whats at the junk yards around here.

Contour wheels ( 15" and 16", I have both ) are 49.5mm offset. Escort and tempo wheels will rub. I have seen a Merkur running Contour wheels. Whether the opposite will work remains to be seen.
