Many of the octane boosts don't actually raise the octane level of the gas, but rather clean out deposits in the combustion space. As this area is cleaned out (remove carbon buildup) you are reducing the compression ratio. As you reduce the compression ratio the less likely your car will knock.
If you use the octane boost additive, make sure it is safe for your O2 sesor and catalytic converter.
