Now that I have a 3L engine in my car, does that put me out of the AutoX? Or could I get by like in ESP or SM?

David,
With my SVT having 85K on the odometer, I looked this one up this weekend. My take on this is that you are still eligible for Street Mod (SM). Some of the cars prepped for this class are tough. Up to 6L N/A or 4L forced induction. I will look up more of the specifics, but I am pretty sure that most anything goes in this class. Street tires, though...No race rubber.
Regards, TheMark

Hmmm, I did a bit more digging. Apparently, all mods legal in Street Prepared (which is darn near everything) are legal for street mod. Also, seems you can run race rubber if you so desire.
This past weekend, I watched a modded Camaro smoke all the rest of the SM cars...So you might be competing against a lot of tough cars. From what I saw on your car page (list of suspension & engine mods) you should be well positioned for some trophies.
With so many miles on my odo, I am tempted to drop a 3L in when it comes time to change motors. I just need a lot more seat time to be competitive...

I would just go into STS/STR unless you think that your competition is going to want you to tear down. The worst case is that you have to hand in the trophy and lose the points. It would still be closer than going head to head with vettes, and other cars that clearly have the advantage. Really hp is overrated when it comes to autoxing, depending on the course. But most courses are tight enough to keep you under 60mph where you really can't use the extra bump, sure a 3liter will be quicker than the 2.5 but not by much. Play the game and bend the rules, I would. IMHO

Can I do STS/STR even with all the other mods that I have?

No the 3 liter mod puts you in a moded class but unless someone protests your o.k. if you don't shout from the mountian tops and have 3liter badging all over you'll be o.k. Legally no but what racer hasn't bent the rule now and then.

Half a liter isn't exactly bending.... but if they are letting the 3 liter BMWs in GS why not a 3 liter contour in STS?

I am going to have to put my $.02 in here. I think that DavidZ would run very well in SM. Heck, with all the mods, you'll run well in just about any street car class. This sport is not about winning or losing. This is about gleaning all kinds of enjoyment out of driving your car right on the limit of adhesion, honing your driving skills, meeting and BSing with others of like mind, and checking out all the other great enthusiast cars that are there at the event. The reason people don't protest is that there is an unspoken gentleman's code out there among racers. I doubt anyone would protest DavidZ in STS, but I think it'd be obvious to a few that he was running a LSD. He might get approached by a couple of folks and asked whether or not he has read the rules, but probably not much more than that. This is all about you and your car and the track vs. the clock. You beating your own time. Believe me when I say that you'll have a great time regardless of what class you are in or whether you win or lose. My suggestion is that you get a set of race rubber and go out there and try to have the most fun you can have on four wheels. In the awesome car you have made, it shouldn't be a monumnetal task. Go street mod. Sure, you might lose...but you might win. Either way, I am sure you will really turn a few heads with quick lap times. Sorry for the rant. I haven't/won't ever cheat in the SCCA. I believe in the code. When I win, it will be because I am the better driver, not because I have undermined the rules of the game.

David, You're only real chioce is Street Mod. And you're engine has to be 3L or less to run at the 1,900 lb weight, otherwise you have to run at 2,000 lbs... ;-) FYI... I'm building an engine for my 240Z to run in the SM2 class - 3L, 250 rwhp, and I should be able to get the car down to 2,000 lbs (its at 2,200 right now). With assholes like me starting to build cars specifically for the class rules, homebuilts like your Contour really don't stand a chance. Sorry... SM info: http://streetmodified.org
