Some of the higher horsepower car driver's prefer automatics. Roger Johnson, a multi-time national champion, always drives automatic Corvettes. Supposedly some turbo cars benefit from autos by being able to maintain boost. Lesser powered car would suffer even if you manually shifted the automatic.

I autocross with an atx.The course i run is
long but very tight more designed for handling and driver performance, this allows
for the atx.I just put it in first and second through out the course. On the longest strech i make to the end in second well before the red line.

Yes I have seen many people race with auto trannies in the 6 or 7 years that i've been autocrossing. I almost hate to say it but I've also been beeten by a couple of em' in the past. I race a '95 Contour SE and have won a few with my 5 speed but in the last couple of years there has been an Olds Alero, a Saab 9/5, and a supercharged Pontiac Grand Prix racing in the Detroit region G-Stock class that have been very fast. Some people prefer the atx in high horsepower cars but I think that a manual is certainly better and more preferred for smaller cars with less than 300 hp. But there are people who race and have won with small cars with slush boxes so I guess it's just a matter of figuring out how to let the tranny work for you and maintain good momentum through the corners. Just be careful not to accidentally shift it into neutral while accelerating. That could be bad!
