Here's my take, FWIW. Whatever you buy won't last much more than the full year if you autocross much at all. I drove my SVT in six or eight autoxs this year plus about 18,000 steet miles. The stock BFGs are shot. If you're just starting out, as I was, don't spend big money on a "good" steet tire because it just won't last. And driving skill will need to come before you can get you're moneys worth out of a more expensive tire.
The flip side is that if you buy race tires now, both sets will last longer. Race tires, if not abused, will outlast street tires by a long shot when pushed hard in competition. If you're going to autox ALOT, this may be an option.
