CEG runs off a 1.5Mbit a sec T1 line so a 1.1 at 80% is 880Mbit a sec or roughly 100KB a Sec. With the changes that Lance is exspected to make for CEG then that should be more then enough. The response time might be a little slower at peak hours but it really comes down to the network switching and other equipment used to get to the Server.

2500 is well worth the cost, but if this is something that would need to be done the funding for the next year would need to be had well in advance of the due date (say 6 months just to be on the safe side) plus who foots the bill for any hardware failure? If we want to keep it around this needs to be a community effort not just a Lance and Admin effort.

I say raise 5 grand then we're in the clear for a good while.

I'll throw $30 down, more if I have it. I'm in for cutting offtopic, and offtopic'ish posts to save precious bandwith.

1.1 dsl to 100mbit switch with little traffic to server!

Funding for next year would start well in advance and we only have a one year contract! If we don't get the money we can the site again!

I've got some money around here somewhere...Oh, there it is!

Bear in mind that the original $12.50 was decided if only 200 people donate a total of $2500, if more donate, that cost would go down. If we need 5 grand for a year;
200 people=$25 per person
300 people=$16.67
400=$12.50
500=$10
I don't know exactly how many dedicated members we have, but I think it's safe to say that at least the first figure is attainable.

I can't put a price on what this site has done for me. Had someone not told me about it-hell, I don't know. Anyway, we need to find out how many people would be willing to donate and then go from there.

This is me---> frown

And in a year, Lance and I will be in our house and we could probably house it on our DSL line if we raised the funds and that way if Lance ever needed to make upgrades and what not, the server would be at our house. Which by the way, we have purchased one, it is just being built and won't be done until Oct so if we were to house it, the site would have to go down until October, which is why we need someone else to do it this year.

Christy,

You're building? Make sure it has at least a 3-bay garage laugh

Andy:

I work at an ISP myself, so one thing you'll want to be cautious of what's in the DSL contract. Make sure that you are allowed to host a website before you do this! If they find out you're doing this (We used to do port scans on people to see if they had Port 80 (HTTP), Port 21-22 (FTP) and Port 23 (Telnet) open, as well as mail ports 25 and 110, becuase our Terms of Service said that they couldn't run servers. If we found it, we'd warn them, and then if we found it again, they got 0wn3d. Judging from the price of the service though, it seems like you can do whatever you want smile Just cover your butt and make sure though!

No...that turns it into a business endeavor and then you have to worry about taxes and so on. Not gonna happen.
