This is the best I've figured out by talking with various Ford parts sources. When they first came out around $30, Ford priced them to make their usual 100% mark up. Then someone figured out that by buying the Bullit parts seperate, they could make a "fake" Bullit Mustang. Ford couldn't sell 'em under the guise of exclusivity, and the inherent better profit margins, although there is a unique plaque! So the initial supply went fast and the next run better reflects what Ford considers the "right" price. If you found someone selling them with the old price-go get 'em, before they're gone!
