Yeah, I've heard of stories of people walking out with like 13 PS2s. The limit seems to only apply to the XBox and Gamecube units. Kinda wish I needed something, but I've got all the games I want, already have an extra controller, and the DVD remote.

This sucks, it's *my* deal, and I can't even benefit from it smile

Chris: If you're looking for games, SSX Tricky, Grand Theft Auto 3, Gran Turismo 3, and Tony Hawk 3 (what the heck is up with all the 3's?) are my favorites right now, can't go wrong with any of them. Final Fantasy 10 comes out out tomorrow, and that's supposed to be really good as well.

Thanks for the info Chris, you have a PM.

Well there doesn't seem to be much interest here or on other boards I've posted this. The best information I've gotten is:

1) With American Express Blue Card, purchases at Virgin Megastore are 30% off i.e. PS2= $210. This is only until the 26th of December and cannot be used online. (Thanks OC!)

2) At www.bluelight.com using the coupon code HOLIDAYREWARD, you get a 10% discount on all purchases. So PS2 is about $275 shipped. This is until the 31st of December.

Merry Christmas everyone, happy hunting!

From what I can gather, this is just a rumor. The retailers would get killed on this, because the millions of PS2's bought for Christmas would be eligble for a price match from BB, Circuit City, and the others, since the price changed within 30 days of their purchase. These retailers would lose a TON of money, and in turn would probably stop selling the PS2, to screw Sony. And the PS2 would essentially sell less, despite the lower price smile

They'd probably do it as a mail in rebate that would be extended to units purchased after Dec.1/2001. This happens all the time on other goods.

The rumors of a PS2 price drop are FALSE. I work for Best Buy and know what the sales are like in the near future. PS2 will stay $299 for at least the next month (Thats as far ahead as I know.) I have heard rumors of a possible price drop in late Feb. early March. But those are just rumors. Only Sony knows for sure when the price will change. I do think it will be soon though.

Why even bother dropping the price, when Sony is selling more PS2s than Game Cubes and XBox's put together? It's simple economics. Once the other two systems start gaining ground, that's when you'll see the price start to drop.

Also, consoles such as the XBox are sold under cost, the hope being that they'll make the money back on the games (their own sales, as well as development royalties) and accessories. I'm not familiar with the actual cost of a PS2, but if it's similar to the XBox scenerio, there's probably not much more room for them to drop, w/o losing money.

Let's not forget that when launched sony was taking $180 loss on ps2's. Don't expect a price drop until they've recouped that cost, or until the cost of manufacturing the system has dropped dramatically. It's true all hardware nowadays sells at a loss, console wise....but let's not expect sony to just throw money out the door. Unless they're in big trouble!
