My 3-Combo just arrived today. It was waiting for me when I got home from work. As luck would have it, my CEL was on, so
I wasted no time in making use of my new toy to find out why.
It turns out that I was apparently mistaken in my guess about how the 3-Combo differs from the Tricom. I had expected that the 3-Combo would include the three gateway routers as separate parts, and that, in using it, you would have to select and install the appropriate router for the vehicle you are using it with. It turns out to be a simple unit, with a small black box having a grey cable coming out one end and terminating in a DB-9 RS-232 connector, and a blue cable coming out the other end terminating in an OBD-II connector. I guess all three routers are installed inside the black box, and it automagically selects the correct one; I had thought that only the Tricom and Indo-3 versions would be this simple.
This unit arrived by itself, with no software or documentation. I had already downloaded the software from <
http://www.obd-2.com> and installed it on an old '486-based laptop computer. When I connected this device to my computer and to my car, and ran the software, everything worked right away, and I had no trouble at all getting it to talk to my car, and to retrieve whatever data were available from my PCM, including
the DTC to tell me why my CEL was on.
