1. Regular running lights/park
2. Blink/Brake/hazard

In order to separate the blink/hazard from the brake, you need to tap into the wires that go to the front lights. The general public will not want to do that. These taillights will have just the red circle that does all the same function as the stock unit. They will fit on ALL years Contour and Mysique. There will be a few different versions of them as well.

The final design is still in the works. They are still getting made, so we really don't need anymore responses. Thanks to all that have so far. Keep an eye on the "Group Buy" section for when they become public. The thread will include ALL the information you will ever want.

Thanks,

Umm I'm willing... anyone else???

To get amber turn signals is really the only reason I would do this mod.

I'm with Dave Andrews. The only reason I would consider this is for amber turn indicators.

I'm an EE, so I think I could handle the wiring laugh

I'd need to look at it a bit, but I suspect you change the wiring at the brake light switch so the existing wires going to the rear brake/turn filament would only go hot during a turn or emergency flasher. You could then drive the stoplights using the third brake light.

I can look at it a bit more if some were interested.

I don't know thing one about plastic fabrication, but I could probably figure out the electrics.

I just looked at the wiring diagrams for the 99 Contour. The brake lights run through the turn signal module, so it appears you could just cut the wire going to the turn signal module and those wires will only go live when you have turn signals or flashers on. You would have to cut it there, because if you broke the connection at the brake light switch things like your cruise control wouldn't turn off and possible ABS problems as well.

You could then run a new wire from the brake light switch to the back of the car for the dedicated brake light only. Or you might be able to drive this off the third brake light, depending on the current draw. I think I saw LEDs in the sample unit.

It seems from the diagrams the connectors I'd go after are in the steering column, right at the Turn Signal Switch, or there is a junction that is supposed to split the Brake Light "signal" in/near the LH A pillar.

So it really appears to be a simple wiring change. If you've wired speakers, this should be just as easy.

As soon as I can get around to converting the images from the service CD to a jpg, I'll post them here.

Chris, don't give up on the amber turns just yet, the wiring is real simple.

I may run a test using my backup lights as turn signals. Or I could just disconnect the brake light switch and verify the turnsignals still work.

Tony,

My taillights that I will be red and amber. There might be a run of red/amber tails in the future, but most people are going to want a direct replacement without any other work. That's what we are focusing on.

The single light tails are going to be great. Wait and see.

But I want amber turn signals too. Mom, it's not fair, Chris is getting amber turn signals, but I can't get any. Mom!?![/whine]

Ok, I feel better now. Anyway, I do hope what I posted will help out.

Cheers,

TB
