OBDII software allows you to interface with a car's On Board Diagnostic system and read trouble codes, determine what triggered a CEL, and other diagnostic data.
Personally I'm waiting for the one on this site to become available for Ford cars in May:
http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/obdscan.html This one can be used with a Palm device (serial not USB) so you don't have to lug around a laptop or run a cable from the house out into the car. It's a little more ($134) but the Palm connectivity makes it worth it for me.
