Okay.. not really a problem, so it goes here..

Patient:
1999 Mecury Cougar
V6 Duratec
Automatic
48,000 miles

Symptom:
Just curious as to the meaning of a light that has been illuminated since she purchased the car about 4 months ago.

The light is located inbetween the rearview mirror, and the front windshield. IT is in a bank of, say, ?7 or 8? It it the left-most light, and is orange in color; a picture of a small open-end wrench. No flashing, no sequence, steady-state illumination from ignition to cut-off. NO CEL, no warning lights. She has no owners manual. Any Cougar owners wanna help her out, here? Thanks in advance, again, CEG...

Ray

Well, seeing as my fiance' and my best friend both have Cougars, I know that it is the scheduled maintenance light. The light is set to turn on after a certain amount of miles that Ford has determined. I think it set to turn on every 5000 miles or so. There is a way to reset it. I think you press and hold 'select' and 'reset' and it will shut the light off and set it to see 0 miles. Then in 5000 miles it will come on again. I guess Ford's recommended oil changes are 5000 miles, so that why they did that. Hope that helps.

(abovementioned fiance here)
check her glove box for the cougar owner's manual.
it's laid out perfectly in there.
the select, units, reset, etc buttons to control the dash computer functions are located right on the dash directly to the right of the steering wheel.

the wrench happens every 4,700 miles I believe, but if you consult the owner's manual, it will tell you exactly what's what.
so go check now and don't just take our word for it.
wink

hold Select and Units buttons on the trip computer for 5 seconds.
the service interval light (wrench) will be illuminated and then extinguish after approximately 4 seconds.

it happens ever 4,800 miles (7700 km) or every 358 days reminding you to check your maintenance schedule for any upcoming routine maintenance (not just oil changes).

I hate these lights btw. especially the silly snowflakes in the winter.
