Preferred method is to lift the car off it. It can also be removed in pieces through the top (and I think it is possible to take it out as a unit from above (just not all that easy). I don't know how easy it would be to mate the engine block to the trans in the car, but nothing is impossible.
Airknight is doing the 3L on his 95, and Micah has done it to a pre-98. Nothing is impossible. It all depends on how much work (and money) you want to put in it.
EDIT: Oh yeah, you should probably remove that last line from your sig, or at least censor it.
