Hopefully there is time left to get a reply or two to this...
My brake pedal and emergency brake have both been getting gradually more slack, which led me to think that the rear drums were either not adjusted or were due for new leather. But when I took it in they said the old shoes were still good. I had the wheel off the other day for brake bleeding, and out of curiosity I wrassled the drum off, and I didn't see any adjuster in there. Are these rear drums really so cheap that they've got no self-adjuster? And is it normal for the brakes to get increasingly slack as the shoes wear down?

Should be a hole in the back plate to reach a tool in and turn the adjuster. Backing up and pumping the brakes several times will sometimes do the trick for drums. I have disk, so I'm only passing along what I've seen in a haynes manual.

Adjuster is not a star wheel at the bottom of the shoes but rather a strut at top. Applying handbrake will adjust as well as normal brake operation. Screwdriver access is solely to release shoes, to aid in drum removal, not for adjustment.
