This has been true for a long time.
It may have something to do with the girl friend/wife's self esteem and confidence or lack there of!
When you treat them poorly long enough they start to beleive it to be true and blame themselves for what is happening. With that, the thought process of "I can't leave him because who else would want to be with someone like me?"
On the other hand, if you treat them well, as we all should, you boost their self esteem and confidence, making them feel better about themselves and with that they realise that they are indeed good people and many guys would love to get to know them too!

In conclusion, we all should treat our girl friend/wives well and with respect. If they want to be with you when you treat them well then you have a stronger relationship that may actually last! She truely wants to be with only you if you treat her well and she stays with you!
